Ceramic and porcelain tile are so frequently installed at or above grade level on a cement board underlayment or directly on plywood that it almost seems novel to install tile directly on concrete.

The concrete floor must also be free of cracks or the vinyl tile will eventually sag into the gap. However some people prefer to add another thin layer of subflooring between the concrete and vinyl. Wash the concrete floor thoroughly using water and household detergent or degreaser.
